Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, among other things, is being ruled a "public nuisance," which could mean the company has to make changes to its apps, writes CNBC.

The verdict is based on allegations that Meta contributed to the "mental health crisis" affecting the state's youth.

The money will be paid into a fund that will be used to support people who have suffered harm from Meta's apps, as well as for preventive measures.

In March, Meta was ordered to pay SEK 3.6 billion in damages to New Mexico for exposing children in the state to risk.

Meta writes in a statement to AFP that the company will appeal the ruling.
