Last year, Meta estimates that ads linked to fraud and illegal goods accounted for as much as 10 percent of the company's revenue, according to documents seen by Reuters.

According to the documents, the platform earned around $16 billion from the dubious ads in 2024, which is equivalent to around 152 billion Swedish kronor. Meta's own calculations are that the company displays 15 billion fraudulent ads per day.

In a comment, Meta states that the calculations seen by Reuters were "exaggerated" and that the company is actively working to reduce the number of fraudulent ads.

The platform has previously received criticism for, among other things, advertisements that lead to so-called "pump and dump" fraud.
