Facebook owner Meta is considering a multi-billion investment in French-Italian Essilor Luxottica, best known for manufacturing Ray-Ban sunglasses, reports Financial Times, citing several sources.
The investment, if it materializes, would be part of Meta's development of so-called smart glasses – an effort where Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has invested billions over the years.
The entire Essilor Luxottica is valued, according to the newspaper, at 87 billion euros (equivalent to over 1,000 billion kronor), but Meta is reportedly only considering buying in as a minority owner.
According to sources, it is not a given that the deal will go through.
Meta and Essilor Luxottica have already initiated a collaboration on so-called Ray Ban-Meta glasses, and there have been talks about deepening this collaboration for some time.
