On December 10, the Australian law, which forces social media to ban people under the age of 16, comes into effect. With one week to go, Meta has started suspending accounts.
The American giant says it will fully adapt to the new legislation, in several stages. However, the company says it wants age verification to be on app stores rather than platforms.
The government should require app stores to verify age and obtain parental consent when teenagers under 16 download apps, so that teenagers do not have to verify their age multiple times across different apps, a spokesperson said.
