Meta Accused of Favoring Flávio Bolsonaro Over Lula in Brazil Election Campaign

The internet giant Meta is accused of favoring right-wing leader Flávio Bolsonaro in Brazil's election campaign.

Leftist President Lula da Silva’s team has taken Meta to Brazil’s electoral court and won. The court has ordered Meta to treat the two presidential candidates equally ahead of the October 25 election.

Internal communications from Meta leaked to Folha de S.Paulo provide some support for the allegations. Employees acknowledge that accounts belonging to Lula’s campaign team have been blocked on Instagram, while Flávio Bolsonaro’s channels have been given more space.

Meta denies bias and says there are technical explanations for what happened.

An audit has also found that Meta ran thousands of political and foreign-sponsored posts, even though only politicians and parties are allowed to pay for election advertising in Brazil.
