According to the opera house, Saudi Arabia has backed out of the deal due to “the current economic situation” in the country.
The prestigious opera house unveiled the controversial sponsorship deal with Saudi Arabia last September. The Met was to stage annual performances in the country and provide artistic education in exchange for financial support.
In January this year, the opera house announced it was forced to make severe cutbacks to save its finances.
