Jorge Messi died last week at a health clinic in Rosario, Argentina, after a long illness. He was 68 years old.
During this summer's World Cup, it became known that his father was ill, but he urged his son to play in the championship anyway. Argentina lost the final to Spain 1-0 after extra time.
"We didn't become champions, but you have no idea how much we enjoyed every game. Once again, you were right: I had to be there and play."
Now the star is casting doubt on his future on the football field.
"I don't know what to do without you, I don't know how to move on. I only played football and now I strongly doubt if I will continue doing it for much longer. You were by my side from the very beginning, there was so little left until the end. Why didn't you hold out a little longer so we could have finished together?" writes Messi.
The Argentine has a contract with American club Inter Miami until the 2028 season.
