It is supposed to be a contract that runs longer than over 2026, reports AFP. Just like the newspaper Miami Herald, the news agency refers to sources close to the club.

ESPN reports that the parties are close to completing contract negotiations and USA Today claims that it is a matter of an extension of "at least two years". Messi's current contract runs out after 2025.

The 38-year-old Argentine has previously stated that the World Championship in the USA, Canada, and Mexico next year will be his last championship in the national team jersey. At the beginning of September, he most likely played his last competitive match on Argentine soil with the national team.

There are many emotions because I know that it is my last competitive match here, said Messi after the World Championship qualifying match against Venezuela, according to La Nacion.

Messi has been named the world's best football player eight times. After successful years in Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, he moved to the USA two years ago to play with Inter Miami. This season, the 38-year-old is credited with 20 goals and 9 assists in 21 league matches.

Three years ago, Messi and his Argentina won the World Championship gold in Qatar.
