According to Bloomberg's billionaire index, Messi has passed the one-billion-dollar wealth threshold, equivalent to just over nine billion Swedish kronor.
He thus joins Cristiano Ronaldo, who passed that level when he signed for Saudi Al-Nassr in 2023.
In Messi's case, the 38-year-old is said to have earned more than $700 million in salary and bonuses since 2023.
Other athletes who have reached this level include former tennis player Roger Federer and basketball player Michael Jordan.
