A shot on the crossbar during extra time. Closer to a goal than that, Inter Miami's superstar Lionel Messi never came in the premiere of the club team World Championship.

It became goalless when the talked-about – and in some circles controversial – tournament got underway during the night towards Sunday Swedish time. Despite a relatively pale game from Miami, the team's big star Lionel Messi got two opportunities for a leading goal, with both a post hit via goalkeeper and a free kick just outside the post.

Instead, it was the Egyptian Al Ahly who led the game, especially during the first half with several dangerous chances.

The goalless result now means some headache for the teams, which next face Palmeiras from Brazil and Porto from Portugal in group A.
