Cornellà, which plays in Spain's fifth division, confirms on its website that Messi is taking 100 percent ownership of the club.
The club, based in Catalonia, highlights that the purchase deepens Messi's connection to the region - a relationship that was formed during his years in Barcelona and has continued ever since.
Messi has been named the world's best footballer eight times. After successful years at Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, he moved to the United States two years ago to play for Inter Miami. He also won the World Cup with Argentina in Qatar in 2022.
Cornellà is third in Spain's fifth division and has a shot at a playoff spot.
