Messi started the World Cup qualifier against Iceland on the substitutes' bench, but with around 20 minutes left to play he came on and quickly scored one of the team's goals. Argentina won the match 3–0.
The Argentine superstar, who turns 39 in June, has had injury concerns ahead of the World Cup.
In the World Cup opener, Argentina, the reigning world champion, will face Algeria. The group also includes Austria and Jordan.
The World Cup is expected to be Messi's farewell to international football. He now needs four more goals to become the all-time leading scorer at the World Cup.
