German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is sharply criticizing the US's new national security strategy.

Merz calls parts of the new Trump strategy "unacceptable."

"I see no need for the Americans to now want to save democracy in Europe," Merz said, according to the AFP news agency.

The security strategy, published on the White House website on Friday, warns the United States against following the same path as Europe, which the document says risks “civilizational annihilation.” The EU is accused of “undermining political freedom and sovereignty,” and immigration, low birth rates, and alleged threats to freedom of expression in Europe are pointed out as threats to the continent.

Formulations that the United States should “cultivate resistance” in European countries have caused several European politicians to react violently.

In an interview with Politico published on Tuesday, Trump launches a new attack, calling Europe a group of countries "in decline", led by "weak" leaders.
