Donald Trump praised the German election result. But the future Chancellor Friedrich Merz is not as overwhelmingly positive about the US President's previous statements.

I never thought I would have to say something like this on TV, he said on the public service channel ARD before taking a stand:

After the latest statements from Donald Trump last week, it is clear that the Americans, at least those in the current American government, do not care about Europe's fate at all.

Prior to the election, the Christian Democratic leader had contact with several European leaders about future joint strategies.

For me, it is an absolute priority to strengthen Europe as soon as possible, so that we can step by step achieve independence from the USA.

Prior to the election, German authorities warned of Russian influence and interference in the election campaign. But Merz says that the threat does not only come from the East, reports DW.

He accuses, among others, tech billionaire and Trump advisor Elon Musk of having interfered in the German election by expressing his support for the far-right party AFD. As recently as Saturday, Musk wrote "AFD!" on his platform X.

Washington's electoral influence was no less dramatic and shameless than what we have seen from Moscow, says Merz and calls Musk's behavior "shameless".
