Germany does not need the same fighter jets as France, the German chancellor said. It is the clearest signal yet of hesitation about the joint development project.

This is not a political quarrel. We have a real problem with the requirements profile. And if we can't solve it, we can't maintain the project, says German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on the German politics podcast "Machtwechsel".

France wants a jet that can carry nuclear weapons and operate from aircraft carriers, characteristics that Germany is not currently pursuing, reports Politico.

Germany and France announced in 2017 that they would develop a new type of fighter aircraft to replace both the multinational Eurofighter and the French Rafale.
