The season has not gone at all as Russell had hoped. The 28-year-old was the clear favourite to win the world title before the season began, but instead it is his teammate Kimi Antonelli who has been in the spotlight. And when Antonelli secured the title at the Mexican GP on Sunday, Russell took it badly.
He congratulated Antonelli, but then left the track and did not show up for the press conference. It cost him dearly.
Mercedes has been fined 5,000 euros, equivalent to approximately 54,000 kronor.
Russell is being defended by Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff.
He is not happy with the situation. But he showed sportsmanship when he congratulated Kimi. I know this is a difficult situation for him, says Wolff.
Russell is fourth in the standings ahead of this weekend's race in Brazil.
