USA's first lady Melania Trump says that she has had direct contact with Russia's president Vladimir Putin about children who have been abducted during the war in Ukraine. Eight children are reported to have been reunited with their families in the last 24 hours.

Ukraine has accused Russia of having taken away around 20,000 children since the invasion began.

Melania Trump says that she sent a letter to Putin about the kidnapped children after the summit in Alaska in August, which Putin then responded to.

A lot has happened since President Putin received my letter in August, says Melania Trump at a press conference.

She says that she has since had a "direct line" to Putin about the children.

We have agreed to cooperate for the best of all parties involved, she says.

As a result of the contact, she claims that eight children have been reunited with their families.

Corrected: In an earlier version of the text, the wrong time for the summit in Alaska was stated.
