"The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One" will hit theaters on Ascension Day, May 6 next year. Audiences will then have to wait for part two of the sequel until May 25, 2028.
In a press release, Gibson thanked the actors and crew, saying that they "together have created something powerful" and that "the film represents a large part of his life's work."
"The Passion of the Christ" was released in 2004 and is about the crucifixion of Jesus. The film grossed over $610 million worldwide and received three Oscar nominations.
