According to figures from the press freedom organization Reporters Without Borders, which together with the activist network Avaaz has collected the appeal, 220 journalists in Gaza have been killed by Israel in less than two years.
On August 10, six journalists were killed in a targeted attack on Al Jazeera's well-known reporter Anas al-Sharif. And less than a week ago, Israel's military killed five journalists in two attacks shortly after each other at Nasser Hospital in central Gaza.
A total of 257 media outlets in over 50 countries have joined the campaign. Part of the appeal consists of publishing a black banner on Monday to draw attention to the deadly situation for journalists in Gaza – but a review shows varying results.
"At the rate at which journalists are being killed in Gaza by the Israeli army, there will soon be no one left to keep you informed" is written in large letters on the Swedish newspaper Dagens ETC's news site, while other participating newspapers have only published an opinion piece.
The appeal formulates three demands: that Palestinian journalists be protected, that foreign media be allowed to report from the Gaza Strip, and that governments around the world offer protection for Palestinian journalists fleeing Gaza.
