According to the auction house Bruun Rasmussen, the sale aroused great interest among collectors worldwide, and the medal sold for three times its starting price, which was 200,000–300,000 SEK.
The medal was designed by French artist Jules-Clément Chaplain and depicts Zeus and the goddess of victory, Nike, on the obverse. The reverse features the Athenian landmarks the Acropolis and Parthenon, as well as an inscription reading "International Olympic Games – Athens 1896".
241 athletes from 14 countries participated in the first modern Olympic Games. It is not certain whose medal was sold at Sunday's auction.
