Wine consumption fell by 2.7 percent in 2025, compared to 2024, to 208 million hectoliters. Since 2018, wine consumption has decreased by 14 percent.
An increasingly difficult economic climate and changing consumption patterns are cited as reasons.
"Changing lifestyle patterns, shifting social habits and generational shifts continue to influence consumer behavior," writes the OIV.
The organization points to three markets that play a crucial role in the decline: China, France and the United States. In China, consumption fell 13 percent last year. In France, it fell 3.2 percent and in the United States, 4.3 percent.
Wine production, on the other hand, increased by 0.6 percent in 2025, but this is compared with the historically low production in 2024.
