A case of measles has been confirmed at Vrinnevis Hospital in Norrköping. The patient is believed to have been infected while abroad, local newspapers in Norrköping report.

Measles cases are uncommon in Sweden, but have become more common across Europe. In the Östergötland Region, the disease was last detected six or seven years ago. Recently, a case was detected in Gothenburg.

In Sweden, 98 or 99 percent of the population is vaccinated, but there are countries where only around 70 percent accept vaccination. Then the spread of infection can occur. We are seeing increased travel, and then individual cases can also appear here, says Britt Åkerlind, infectious disease physician in Region Östergötland.

The patient, who sought care at the end of January, was not vaccinated.
