Rory McIlroy has received an apology from the PGA of America CEO for the behavior of the American crowd during the Ryder Cup.

McIlroy tells the BBC that he and wife Erica received a message from Derek Sprague, CEO of the PGA of America, which organizes the competition together with Ryder Cup Europe.

He couldn't have been more kind and apologetic, and he wrote us a nice letter, which we really appreciated.

McIlroy endured boos and heckles from American fans at Bethpage Black, outside New York, when Team Europe won the Ryder Cup in September. His wife Erica also suffered various abuse from the crowd. She also had a beer mug thrown at her.

"I took it as a compliment that they were targeting me. But at the same time, it was a tough week," McIlroy said.
