The meeting between the Spanish and English giants was open on beforehand after the match in Manchester last week. But Real had a mental upper hand after having turned a 1-2 deficit into a 3-2 victory in the final minutes.
When Wednesday's meeting kicked off, it took less than four minutes for Real to continue their goal production. Kylian Mbappé scored his first of three goals for the evening. The 26-year-old Frenchman then scored two more goals in the 33rd and 61st minutes and was credited with a hat-trick when Real won 3-1.
"Strong at home"
The Spaniards thus advanced to the round of 16 with a total score of 6-3. Mbappé received a standing ovation from the home crowd at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium when he was substituted in the 78th minute.
We know that we are very strong at home and we played as a team in the best possible way, and we made our fans very happy, says Mbappé to Movistar according to AFP.
Norwegian attacking star Erling Braut Haaland sat on the bench with a nagging injury throughout the match for Manchester City, who were eliminated from the tournament.
Paris Saint-Germain thrashed French colleagues Brest 7-0 and a total crushing 10-0.
Juventus faltered
Juventus had a 2-1 lead from the home match against PSV Eindhoven to build on, but saw their lead go up in smoke in the Netherlands. PSV arranged for extra time via 2-1 after 90 minutes of play, and there Ryan Flamingo decided.
Juventus were thus eliminated from the Champions League – the same fate that befell fellow Italian teams Milan and Atalanta on Tuesday.
The round of 16 draw will take place on Friday, with the matches to be played in March.
