With their heads hanging, the French players left the pitch after Spain dominated the semi-final and won 2-0. Superstar Kylian Mbappé voiced his disappointment on French television.
"It's a huge disappointment, I can't describe it in words," he told M6, according to Marca.
According to the 27-year-old, "Les Bleus" were always a step behind in the game and with stars like Rodri and Fabián Ruiz facing them in midfield, the mistakes were too many.
"When you add everything up, the result is a loss," says Mbappé.
Criticism in the French media was not long in coming. L'Equipe writes that France received "a lesson in football from the Spaniards".
RMC Sport briefly states: "The American dream is over.
Le Parisien calls the loss "a cruel disappointment."
"The French team got a Spanish lesson, almost a crushing one. Now we're going home. The World Cup is almost over, you can return to your crosswords and regular activities. The dream is over," writes columnist Dominique Sévérac.
