A gunman opened fire on people on the street in the Ukrainian capital. The gunman later took several people hostage and barricaded himself in a nearby shopping mall. He was shot dead by police after special forces stormed the premises when negotiators failed to make contact with him.

The shooter also fired at police. According to Mayor Vitali Klitschko, the contact attempts lasted for 40 minutes.

Klitschko said the gunman killed four people on the street before entering the shopping mall, where a fifth person was killed. A young woman later died in hospital, he told reporters at the scene, AP reports.

Klitschko said the man was armed with a rifle that was legally registered and that he had also applied to renew the permit and submitted a medical certificate with it.

On Telegram, the mayor wrote that 15 injured people, including a child, were taken to hospital after the shooting.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed his condolences to the families of the victims.

"We expect a swift investigation," the president wrote on X.
