The theft was discovered by a guard on Saturday and the museum has now filed a police report, Le Monde reports.
The artwork, which consists of a banana taped to a wall, has already been replaced with another banana. This is not the first time the artwork has been affected; last year a visitor ate the banana at the same museum, but no report was made. Since the thief this time is unknown, the museum is choosing to go to the police “out of respect for the art.”
The work attracted a lot of attention upon its debut in 2019. In 2024, a version was sold for $5.2 million to crypto figure Justin Sun, who then ate it in front of cameras.
