Ekholm has played 15 NHL seasons and has been in Edmonton since 2022-23. He played for Tre Kronor last season at the Four Nations. The 35-year-old was part of the 2018 World Cup gold medal team.
He was not selected for the Olympics last winter and was very disappointed about it. But he said yes when national team captain Sam Hallam asked him to join the World Cup squad in Switzerland, which will be played from May 15-31.
NHL players Arvid Söderblom, Albert Johansson, Simon Holmström, Emil Heineman, Oskar Sundqvist and Lucas Raymond have already agreed to play in the World Cup.
