It was with less than half an hour left until the start of the match that the news came: Matteo Arnaldi was forced to withdraw because the Italian had been feeling unwell since Thursday.
"I woke up in the middle of the night to vomit. Then I tried to sleep but couldn't," a dejected Arnaldi told reporters at a press conference.
The 25-year-old said he called a doctor but received no help.
I couldn't eat or drink, it's hard. It's not a situation I want to be in.
Flavio Cobolli will meet Germany's Alexander Zverev on Sunday.
