Matt Cameron was during the first half of the 1990s – Pearl Jam's heyday – drummer in another Seattle band, Soundgarden, but had previously been involved in some of Pearl Jam's first demo recordings.
So when Soundgarden split up in 1998 and Pearl Jam's drummer Jack Irons the same year chose to leave, Matt Cameron took his place.
Pearl Jam has stayed together since its inception in 1990 and released new music as recently as last year. Who will replace Matt Cameron is not known.
