The fish, which measured just over 3.3 metres, is believed to be the largest ever caught in waters off the east coast of the United States and was just 64.4 kilograms short of the world record for an Atlantic blue marlin.
It took about three hours to get the enormous fish onto the boat. The meat was divided among about ten people.
"I wasn't going to eat a 500-kilogram fish myself," says fisherman Walter Chapman.
The head has been sent to a laboratory to determine the age of the fish, which is estimated to have been between 25 and 30 years old.
