The circumstances of the shooting are unclear at an early stage, but the local police authority in the town of Little River describes it as an "isolated incident" that does not pose a threat to the general public.
The shooting took place in a residential area near the Atlantic coast. Little River has just over 10,000 inhabitants.
Many of the injured were taken to hospital in private vehicles, the police further report.
