Eight of eleven judges in Mexico's supreme court have resigned in protest against a controversial law that means the people will get to elect all of the country's judges.

The law change was pushed through by the recently departed president Manuel López Obrador and will be applied from 2025 onwards.

Human rights organization Human Rights Watch has warned that the change "will seriously undermine the independence of the judiciary".
