It was during qualifying for the ADAC 24-hour race at the historic Nürburgring that the accident occurred on Saturday.

Seven cars were involved in the crash. The race was stopped and rescue workers were quickly on the scene. 66-year-old Finn Juha Miettinen was seriously injured, and later died from his injuries.

Six others were injured, including 20-year-old Swede Siri Hökfelt, reports Expressen.

She called me and said everything was fine. Then she was airlifted to the hospital. She remains there for observation. It's a standard procedure when something like this happens, Siri Hökfelt's father Per Hökfelt tells the newspaper.

F1 star Max Verstappen is taking part in the race, but was not on track when the accident happened. He described himself on Instagram as being shocked, according to The Guardian.

"Motorsport is something we all love, but at times like these, it is a reminder of how dangerous it can be. I send my heartfelt condolences to Juha's family and loved ones."
