Over 100 masked individuals have attacked cars on a highway with metal bars, molotov cocktails and grenade launchers in the city of Limoges in France. Nine police officers have been injured during the clashes that began during the night towards Saturday.
According to French authorities, the incident is believed to have been a gang war. To control the crowd, the police responded with tear gas and ammunition.
"This was not a spontaneous protest to complain about something. No pretext, nothing. It's about destroying things and showing that the territory belongs to one", said the city's mayor Emile Roger to AFP.
According to the French prosecution authority, several vehicles were attacked, some with families and children in them.
"None of the drivers were physically attacked. Several are however deeply shocked", writes the prosecution authority in a statement.
During Saturday, the country's interior department announced that a special security force will be sent to the city.
