Marseille and Lille Close Club Stores After Vandalism and Looting in France Riots

Riots in France this weekend have affected Marseille and Lille, forcing the clubs to close their souvenir shops after extensive vandalism and looting.

Marseille said in a statement that the club's official store on La Canebière, perhaps the southern French port city's most famous street, will remain closed until further notice due to extensive vandalism and looting.

Further north in France, Lille has suffered the same fate. The club announced that its city-centre store had suffered major damage and would remain closed for the foreseeable future.

Lille wrote that the club would like to thank "everyone who has shown support - primarily our store staff - but also the many passers-by, whether supporters or not, who spontaneously came forward to offer help and comfort."

Hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets across France this weekend, driven by dissatisfaction with the high cost of living, underfunded schools and the incumbent government. In many places, protests degenerated into violent clashes, widespread vandalism and looting of shops.
