Van Bommel most recently came from a spell at Belgian side Royal Antwerp, where he was in charge between 2022 and 2024.
The 49-year-old has also coached German club Wolfsburg and PSV Eindhoven during his coaching career.
He has a solid playing career behind him, having played for big clubs like Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Milan - where he was a teammate of Zlatan Ibrahimovic. He won 79 caps for the Netherlands.
