This means that he will remain in custody pending a decision by a higher court.

The so-called "bonus prince" has been detained on suspicion of, among other things, several counts of rape since the main hearing concluded in May. He has requested to be released in shackles.

"I want to go out and be there for my mother, who is seriously, seriously ill," Høiby said in court on Monday afternoon.

In its decision, the district court refers specifically to the "demanding situation" with his sick mother.

Mette-Marit has been placed on the waiting list for a lung transplant after her pulmonary fibrosis worsened.

The verdict against Høiby will be announced on June 15.
