Defense lawyers dispute the prosecution’s claim that Maradona’s death in November 2020 was predictable, arguing that it was caused by an “acute” heart attack.

“There was absolutely no way to foresee this fatal outcome,” said Francisco Oneto, one of several defense lawyers.

Seven members of Maradona’s medical team have been accused - despite their denials - of providing the Argentine with inadequate care during the 60-year-old’s final two weeks of life, when he was being cared for at a home outside Buenos Aires after undergoing surgery for a blood clot in his brain.

Prosecutors have requested a 12-year prison sentence for the brain surgeon, who is considered a key figure in decisions about Maradona’s care during that period.
