According to the Swedish Local Authorities and Regions (SKR) waiting time database, more than 146,000 people were waiting for surgery in February. Of these, more than a third had waited over 90 days.

The queue situation worsened during the pandemic but has improved somewhat in recent years. However, the queues are being filled by Sweden's aging population.

The fact is that the number of operations in Swedish healthcare is increasing, but needs - the number of patients who need help - are also increasing, says Johan Kaarme, head of the department for care and welfare at SKR, on the radio.
