In the past few years, college courses on artificial intelligence (AI) have exploded. At the same time, the number of women in the AI student population has increased.

In 2018, a modest number of AI courses started at universities and colleges: 94. Last year, the number of course starts had almost quintupled, to 460.

From having been primarily part of civil engineering programs and specialist education in technology, AI is now being studied in an increasing number of subjects and more often as stand-alone courses, shows a new report from the Swedish University Chancellor's Office (UKÄ).

At the same time, the group of students studying AI has also changed. Younger men are still in the majority, but the proportion of women has increased from around 20 percent to 40 percent. The proportion of slightly older students – over 25 years old – has also increased slightly, which can be explained by increased opportunities for professionals to study a stand-alone course.
