Drones struck Ternopil overnight Wednesday, causing large fires. Three children were among the dead, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky.
"Once again, the Russians have killed innocent, peaceful people who were just sleeping in their homes," the president wrote on social media.
"There are still people under the rubble and rescue workers are continuing to search."
In addition to all the dead, at least 93 people have been injured.
Jumped out the window
On the street outside the apartment building, body bags were lined up in the devastation in connection with the early rescue work.
"When we heard the explosions, we all jumped out the window. Our apartment was completely filled with smoke, it must have burned down, but we don't know," Rostyslava Parij, who lives on the first floor of one of the buildings in Ternopil, told the Ukrainian public service companySuspilne .
The upper floors of the high-rise building have suffered very extensive damage, according to rescue service spokesman Serhij Danilin.
"It is extremely difficult to conduct search operations there. But rescue workers are taking all measures to go through the building and identify all possible victims and provide them with assistance," he tells Suspilne.
