Details about the incident on Sunday are sparse, as Myanmar has become a closed country under the ruling military regime and there is an ongoing civil war on several fronts.
Another 70 people were injured in the explosion, according to rescue workers on the scene. The explosion occurred a few kilometers from the border with China, in the town of Kaungtup, the AP news agency reported from Bangkok, Thailand.
A militant separatist group fighting Myanmar's central government is said to control the area in Shan State.
