At least 70 people have been killed in Khan Yunis in southern Gaza, according to the Hamas-controlled health authority. Another 200 people are said to have been injured.
Israel's military has not commented on the reports, but in a statement, the military says that fighter jets and tanks have "eliminated terrorists in the area". Israeli fighter jets are also said to have attacked weapons depots, outposts, and tunnel shafts.
The attack comes after Israel's military ordered the evacuation of the eastern parts of the humanitarian zone Muwasi. This is due to plans for an operation against Hamas members who are located in the area and, according to the military, are firing rockets at Israel from there.
Many Palestinians have repeatedly been forced to leave their homes, trying to reach safety during the war that broke out after Hamas' terrorist attack on Israel on October 7.
Recently, Israel stated that it estimates that at least 1.8 million Palestinians are now in the humanitarian zone. According to the UN and humanitarian organizations, there is a lack of access to sanitation, healthcare, and aid efforts.
