Around 40 people have been confirmed dead and over 100 are still missing after an overloaded ferry capsized in Congo-Kinshasa, according to local authorities.
The accident occurred late on Friday evening, on the Busira River in the country's northwestern parts.
The ferry was part of a convoy with other vessels. Many of the passengers are said to have been traders on their way home to celebrate Christmas, according to Joseph Kangolingoli, mayor of the town of Ingende, which is located near the accident site.
About twenty people have been rescued.
