Several children died after being trampled to death when panic broke out at a temporary amusement park in southwestern Nigeria, authorities confirmed on Wednesday.
Security forces were present at the scene and have arrested those who organized the celebration.
"The incident occurred at an Islamic school that had a family market. A large number of people were killed in the chaos that ensued – and many were trampled to death", said Governor Syi Makinde in a statement.
The accident occurred in the state of Oyo near the city of Lagos. Around 5,000 people were expected to visit the amusement park, where prizes were promised to young visitors.
