The former goalkeeper died on Thursday, aged just 48, when the car he was travelling in collided with a train at a railway crossing without barriers.

Manninger played for Arsenal between 1997 and 2002. There he mainly served as second goalkeeper and was part of the team that won the Premier League title in 1998.

Juventus, Fiorentina and Liverpool were other clubs he played for during a career that also included 33 international caps for Austria.

Several former teammates have paid tribute to Manninger on social media, with Arsenal quickly requesting that their players be allowed to wear armbands in today's match.

Manchester City won the match 2–1.
