The judge referred to Mangione's defense lawyers, who said the suspect was suffering from "extreme emotional distress at the time of the incident."
The murder of health insurance company CEO Brian Thompson outside a Manhattan hotel in December 2024 drew widespread attention.
Mangione fled to Pennsylvania, where he was arrested at a restaurant carrying a notebook expressing hostility toward the health insurance industry and its executives.
The trial is scheduled for September. Mangione faces life in prison if convicted of murder.
