The former Ballon d'Or winner was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and dementia in 2021, and has been fighting the disease since then. On Friday evening, it was announced that Law had passed away, 84 years old.
"It is with a heavy heart that we tell you that our father, Denis Law, sadly has passed away. He has fought a tough battle, but has finally found peace. We want to thank everyone who has contributed to his well-being and care, both earlier and more recently", writes his family on Manchester United's website and continues:
"We know how much people supported and loved him, and that love has always been appreciated and made a difference. Thank you."
Law was one of United's most successful players, and scored a total of 237 goals in 404 matches for the club. Only Wayne Rooney and Bobby Charlton have more goals.
In addition, he was awarded the Ballon d'Or, which is awarded to the world's best football player in a calendar year, in 1964 and is still the only Scot to win the prize.
