The victim was murdered in the man's apartment in a small town outside Uppsala on May 18 of this year. The man then walked into a nearby grocery store and told them he had murdered his friend. He asked them to call the police, and the man was arrested shortly thereafter.
According to the investigation, the victim was given dozens of axe blows to the body and head, as well as a stab wound to the neck.
The crime was committed while heavily intoxicated and the man has admitted to the violence but said that his intention was not to kill. According to the man, the attack was preceded by the friend not wanting to leave his home, which made him “black out” and that the severe violence he then inflicted was impulsive.
The prosecutor had requested life imprisonment, but Uppsala District Court sentenced him to 18 years in prison.
The district court does not believe that the act was as "qualifiedly reckless as the provision on life imprisonment aims for", and further writes that it was an impulsive act committed in a state of strong emotion.
